The infrastructure of medicine, finance, scientific research, engineering, national security, international trade and of course, every day digital life, like you being able to write such a post, are reliant on compute. If your idea is to completely roll-back society, that in itself is apocalyptic. Practicality aside, to forcibly shut down a multi-trillion-dollar global industry, enforcing international compliance, and policing rogue engineers would inherently require the exact kind of draconian, global authoritarian surveillance state you are trying to avoid. So the moral high-ground is lost there as well.
Rather, anything new is subject to mass-hysteria and fear. It's a natural response. We should not let fear direct our worldview, but instead be open to constantly learning more about where the world is headed, and why.
